Ms. Heather Hutchinson
Faculty Extension Assistant & Nutrient Management Specialist
Western Maryland Research and Education Center
Faculty Extension Assistant & Nutrient Management Specialist
Agricultural Nutrient Management Program
Heather is a Nutrient Management Specialist for the Agricultural Nutrient Management Program, which is a component of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. She joined the Program in 2002, and enjoys many responsibilities associated with providing training and technical assistance related to nutrient management. Heather feels the most rewarding part of her job is creating, organizing, and delivering training programs and materials that help farmers achieve and maintain Operator Certification status in nutrient management. This level of certification, which is provided by the Maryland Department of Agriculture, allows farmers to write nutrient management plans for their own operations.
In addition to helping farmers achieve certification, Heather is responsible for creating the award-winning “Newtrient News” newsletter. This newsletter, which recently received a Certificate of Excellence by the American Society of Agronomy, helps keep Certified Operators informed about new information and upcoming training opportunities related to nutrient management.
Heather, who has a B.S. in Agriculture (1993) and a M.S. in Animal Science (1999), both from Penn State, and a Master of Distance Education (2011) from the University of Maryland University College, also provides training and serves as a technical resource to Certified Nutrient Management Consultants and Maryland Cooperative Extension Nutrient Management Advisors throughout the state of Maryland.
