The Extension Family and Consumer Sciences Educator develops, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive Family and Consumer Sciences program that meets the needs of diverse families and communities in the areas of healthy lifestyles and nutrition, family financial management, and healthy homes-healthy families-healthy communities. The purpose of this program is to improve the quality, economic, social, and cultural aspects of community and family life. This includes leadership development and the interpretation and dissemination of research findings in family and consumer sciences for residents of Cecil County. Programs may be shared with neighboring county/city units.
Responsibilities:
- Identify problems, opportunities and needs of the intended audience.
- Provide leadership and expertise for the development, management, growth and evaluation of a Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) program emphasizing healthy lifestyles and nutrition, family financial management (including housing education), and healthy homes-healthy families, to include training of child care professionals and parents.
- Supervise the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). Provide program leadership for one Nutrition Assistant and one Administrative Assistant.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff in the region to deliver a multidisciplinary Extension FCS program.
- Develop a strong working relationship with community partners and organizations that interface with adults, youth and communities. Seek ways to reach and include individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Develop resources through grants, local funding sources and collaborative funding proposals to support and expand family and consumer sciences programs; utilize available MCE resources, including state specialists and programs, and other federal, state and local resources, as needed, to maintain and enhance programs.
- Participate in Extension programs and events locally, statewide, and nationally, and provide support to and participate in the Extension Advisory Council; market programs to communities and stakeholders and promote positive public relations.
- Serve on county, regional, state and university committees and non-university committees, as appropriate.
Qualifications:
Required –
- Master’s degree, at least one degree in health, nutrition, education, family studies, financial management, family and consumer sciences, community sociology, community development, or related field.
- Experience working with community or family groups and demonstrated teaching and leadership ability is necessary.
- Strong communication and computer skills and people skills.
- Must be willing to work flexible hours, with some evening and weekend hours and travel within the assigned county and the state. Personal transportation and valid driver’s license.
- When offered employment by MCE, the successful candidate will be required to obtain a clear background check by the State of Maryland and FBI.
Preferred –
- Background in nutrition and health sciences, financial management and/or community development.
- Experience in volunteer development, grant writing, grant and program management is desirable.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary will be commensurate with experience, with base salary of $44,000. The University of Maryland offers an extensive benefits package.
