Assistant Director & State Program Leader, 4-H Youth Development
(Tenure/Tenure Track Faculty)
The University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) and Eastern Shore (UMES), invite applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Director, 4-H Youth Development for the University of Maryland Cooperative Extension (MCE). The Assistant Director is administratively responsible to the MCE Associate Dean & Associate Director and must understand and be committed to the Cooperative Extension and Land-Grant University mission and to the 4-H Youth Development Program.
The Assistant Director and State Program Leader provides overall leadership and direction to the Maryland 4-H Center and state-wide programmatic leadership, direction and vision for Maryland 4-H Youth Development faculty, staff and programs through strategic planning, implementation and program evaluation. Candidates should have demonstrated leadership abilities and proven skills in program development, program management, program evaluation and program administration.
Responsibilities:
- Collaboration and partnership with the MCE administrative team, including MCE Associate Dean & Associate Director, Assistant Directors of Family & Consumer Sciences and Agriculture & Natural Resources; Coordinator, Sea Grant Extension, the 1890 Extension Administrator for MCE, and Regional Extension Directors.
- Work with MCE faculty and staff in 24 county/city program units, regional centers and state levels to plan, implement, evaluate and report on successful MCE 4-H Youth Development programs.
- Provide leadership and support to a 4-H program planning process emphasizing needs assessment, evaluation, and statewide outcomes; coordinate core curriculum, publications & evaluation planning processes; develop and manage linkages between Extension Specialists and Extension Educators/Faculty Extension Assistants.
- Develop a strong and productive working relationship with national 4-H partners at 4-H Headquarters, CSREES-USDA and at National 4-H Council.
- Develop and maintain working relationship with College of AGNR faculty, including extension specialists, employees, and faculty in other university departments to develop and expand 4-H Youth Development programming.
- Develop and maintain linkages with relevant individuals, agencies, organizations, in the state, the region, and nationally to enhance Extension’s educational mission in youth development.
- Contribute to the establishment, interpretation and communication of AGNR and MCE policies; integrate MCE and University diversity and affirmative action guidelines into all 4-H program efforts to ensure the inclusion and involvement of diverse individuals and groups in Extension programs and in the Extension workforce.
- Develop 4-H staff capacity through in-service & other professional development training, through the acquisition and management of grants, donations (Maryland 4-H Foundation), and other resources to support 4-H/youth development programs.
- Provide leadership for systematic evaluation of statewide 4-H programs.
- Serve as the spokesperson for the Maryland Cooperative Extension 4-H youth development programs in addressing key issues facing youth and families in Maryland.
Required Qualifications:
- An earned doctorate in Education, Extension Education, Human Development, Family, Child and/or Youth Development, Youth Program Management, Educational Administration, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of seven years relevant experience in youth development and demonstrated progressive administrative experience with Cooperative Extension 4-H youth development experience preferred.
- A successful record of scholarship in teaching, research and/or outreach.
- Demonstrated success in securing and managing grants.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a leader and team member.
- Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communications skills and the ability to communicate effectively and to motivate diverse constituencies at all levels.
- When offered employment by MCE, the successful candidate will be required to obtain a clear background check by the State of Maryland and FBI.
- The successful candidate must be able to qualify for tenure at the Associate or Full Professor level.
